Stock Market Holidays July 2024: Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed for a day in July 2024. Notably, both the exchanges will remain closed on July 17 on the occasion of Muharram. BSE has said that there will be no trading in equity, equity derivatives, SLB, currency derivatives and interest rate derivatives segments on this day.
NSE offers trading throughout the year to provide a great trading experience. A trader has a time window of six hours and fifteen minutes during regular weekday trading hours from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. Notably, the stock, equity derivatives and SLB categories all observe trading holidays on Saturdays and Sundays during which there is no trading.

What is Muharram?
The Shia Muslim community mourns the death of Hussein ibn Ali, son of Ali and grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala. Karbala is a popular holy site in Iraq. Hussein ibn Ali was killed in Karbala in 680 AD. He fought till the end against the army of Yazid I and was eventually killed in battle. The 10th of Muharram, the day of Ashura, commemorates Hussein’s courageous sacrifice. The day of Ashura is especially important for Muslims because it is said that on this day Moses and his followers defeated the Egyptian Pharaoh.
