People using the Inbox app on Android devices have started receiving notifications along with a link, informing them about the transition to the main Gmail app.
Change is never an easy phase. That’s why Google is easing the process for you, notifying you beforehand about the shutdown of its email service, the Inbox app. Users have two weeks before the tech giant begins retiring its Inbox service and switches over to the main Gmail app, most likely along the same time as it gives the axe to Google Plus, it’s social media platform on April 2.
People using the Inbox app on an Android device have already started receiving notifications along with a link, informing them about the transition of all email-related tasks on the Gmail app.
“This app will be going away in 15 days,” reads the Google alert, which many users have since shared online. “You can find your favorite inbox features in the Gmail app. Your messages are already waiting for you.”
On the official Inbox page, a similar message greets users:
“We are saying goodbye to Inbox at the end of March 2019. While we were here, we found a new way to email with ideas like snooze, nudges, Smart Reply and more.”
While these AI-powered features are now a part of the day-to-day experience of the Gmail app, Google had begun experimenting with these first on its Inbox service. Following its launch in 2014, the platform has been utilised to fine-tune many of Google’s email offerings and features, which have since been merged with the primary Gmail app.
In fact, Matthew Izatt, Product Manager of Gmail had hinted about the transition last year itself, explaining their “more focused approach” as far as their email services are concerned.
“We’re planning to focus solely on Gmail and say goodbye to Inbox by Gmail at the end of March 2019,” he announced. In the blog post, Izatt further hinted towards the transition, talking about the latest additions to the Gmail app – like Smart Compose – to make drafting emails easier.
The shutdown of the Inbox coincides with Google sunsetting it’s once-ambitious social media service, Google Plus, which is being put to rest following a slew of issues, including a massive security breach.
