Toll Collection System: If you also often travel on the highway in your car, then this news is for you. During this time, many times you have to stand in a long queue to pay the toll. But now Union Minister Gadkari has made a big announcement regarding this. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the government is considering issuing monthly and annual passes instead of toll collection for private vehicles on the National Highway. He told that the share of private vehicles in the total toll collection is only 26 percent.
Toll collection booths will be built outside villages
Addressing a program, Gadkari said that toll collection booths will be built outside villages so that villagers do not face problems in commuting. The minister said, ’74 percent of toll revenue comes from commercial vehicles. We are considering starting monthly or annual passes for private vehicles.’ He said that the share of private vehicles in the total toll collection is only 26 percent, so the government will not suffer any loss.
GNSS based toll collection system
Gadkari said that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to implement a seamless Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) based toll collection system as an additional facility along with Fastag on National Highways. The GNSS based toll collection system will be better than the existing toll collection. In July last year, Gadkari had said that a pilot study has been conducted on the Bengaluru-Mysuru section of National Highway (NH)-275 in Karnataka and Panipat-Hisar section of NH-709 in Haryana regarding GNSS based user toll collection system.
Toll took an average of 8 minutes in 2018-19
The move is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and charging based on the exact distance traveled on highways. The average waiting time for vehicles at toll plazas during FY 2018-19 was eight minutes. With the introduction of FASTag during FY 2020-21 and 2021-22, the average waiting time of vehicles has come down to 47 seconds. Although the waiting time has improved significantly at some places, especially in densely populated towns near cities, there is still some delay at toll plazas during peak hours.
