Toll Tax Collection New System: A notification has been issued by the government. Under this notification, toll will start soon from Global Navigation Satellite System On-Board Unit. The Ministry of Road Transport has issued the rules.

Toll Tax Collection New System: Apart from Fastag, another toll tax collection system is going to come in the country. Now a new toll tax collection system will be installed on different highways of the country by the central government. Now the toll tax will be collected by the government under the Global Navigation Satellite System. For this, the government has also done a trial on 4 highways and this decision has been taken only after the trial. A notification has been issued by the government. Under this notification, toll will start soon from Global Navigation Satellite System On-Board Unit. The Ministry of Road Transport has issued the rules.

How will this system work

In the notification issued by the government, it has been told that GPS will be used for this. Toll tax will be collected with the help of GPS. GPS devices will be installed on vehicles. A special lane will be prepared for vehicles with GNSSOBU and if other vehicles come in that lane, double the toll will be charged.

It has also been said in the notification that vehicles which do not have a national permit will be allowed to travel 20 km in both directions in a day. In simple language, the toll tax will be paid as much as the journey. Let us tell you that at present, the full price had to be paid for traveling from one toll to another.

It is being told that the owners of private vehicles equipped with this device will not have to pay any fee for a daily journey of 20 km on highways and expressways. The toll tax deducted from GPS will be cheaper as compared to the existing system. Under the new rules notified as National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Amendment Rules, 2024, the vehicle owner will be charged for the total distance only if a distance of more than 20 km is covered on highways and expressways.

Trial done on these highways right now

The driver, owner or person in charge of any vehicle other than vehicles holding national permit who uses the same section of national highway, permanent bridge, bypass or tunnel will not be charged any fee up to a journey of 20 km in each direction in a day under the GNSS-based user fee collection system. The Ministry of Road Transport said in July that it has decided to implement satellite-based toll collection system on select national highways on a pilot basis as an additional facility with Fastag. A pilot study regarding GNSS-based user fee collection system has been done on Bengaluru-Mysore section of NH-275 in Karnataka and Panipat-Hisar section of NH-709 in Haryana.
