The viral post says, “As per the order of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, if you can return within 12 hours during your journey, then you will not have to pay any toll tax on the return journey.”
New Delhi. A post is going viral on social media. It is being claimed that if someone comes back within 12 hours after traveling on national highways, then no toll tax will be levied. The post comes at a time when Gadkari has promised to change the toll system on national highways.
The viral post says, “As per the order of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, if you can return within 12 hours during your journey, then you will not have to pay any toll tax on the return journey.” Apart from this, it is also being claimed in the post that people living within 20 km of the toll plaza will not have to pay toll tax.

Know what is the truth?
The Press Information Bureau recently refuted these claims and said that the viral social media post has been called fake. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) collects toll tax at its plazas across the country as per the National Highways Duty Rules 2008. Toll tax on any part of the National Highway is levied as per the notification issued by the Official Gazette of the Centre.
Toll tax will not be levied on those living within 20 km?
Apart from this, the claim of free toll tax for people living within 20 km is also false. As per the rules, no one is exempted from paying toll tax. However, if someone lives near the toll plaza and has a personal vehicle, then he also has to get a monthly pass made for commuting. This exemption is also available only if the vehicle does not have any other alternate route to avoid the national highway.
Will change the way of toll collection system
Nitin Gadkari recently said that his ministry is going to improve the toll collection system on national highways. Gadkari told Parliament that his ministry will remove all toll plazas from the country in the next six months. He said that based on the actual distance covered on the national highway, the GPS system installed in the car or computerized number plate would be used for collection of toll charges in future.
