NEW DELHI : Forgetting to carry hard copies of your driving licence or vehicle papers can prove painful on your pocket after traffic fines have been increased under the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act from this month. Under the revised rules by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, you can now carry soft copies of your documents in DigiLocker and mParivahan apps.

The two apps allows you to download the driving licence or the registration certificate and store it on your mobile phone. Even if it is not downloaded on your phone, you can show particulars relating to the document through the mParivahan app on the mobile and avoid paying any fine if everything is in order.

Traffic cops have been instructed to treat soft copies at par with the physical ones. However, several motorists are scanning documents and saving it on their phone under the impression that they will not be fined.

The road ministry has clarified that for the electronic documents to be treated as legally recognized at par with the original documents as per the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, it is necessary that they are available on DigiLocker or mParivahan app carried by the user.

This means that if your driving licence or other papers are not on these two apps, you will still be fined. You also need to download it from the app and not upload a scanned image of the document.

If the e-documents are not available on mParivahan or DigiLocker then they will not be treated as legally recognized at par with the original documents.

On the road transport ministry’s mParivahan mobile app, details of registration certificate, driving license, fitness validity, insurance validity, permit validity can be found on real-time basis by entering the driving licence number/registration number pertaining to the vehicles.
