TRAI denied the news of charging customers having more than one SIM

TRAI Update: In June 2024, TRAI issued a consultation paper for the revision of the National Numbering Plan.

TRAI Update: Telecom sector regulator TRAI has denied the news of charging fees for getting mobile and landline numbers. TRAI said in its statement, such speculations are being made that TRAI is considering imposing some kind of charge on customers having more than one SIM and numbering resources, which is completely baseless. TRAI said that the purpose of such false claims is only to mislead the public.

In reference to the consultation paper, TRAI said, it has come to our notice that some media organizations have reported that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has proposed that fees will be charged for allotment of mobile and landline numbers so that these resources can be used properly. According to TRAI, it is being speculated that TRAI is preparing to charge customers for the allocation of numbering resources or for customers having multiple mobile SIMs.

TRAI said in its clarification that such claims are baseless and only serve to mislead the public. According to TRAI, it has consistently been in favour of minimum regulatory intervention and has been promoting forbearance and self-regulation of market forces. TRAI said, we completely reject the false speculations of spreading such misleading information about the consultation paper and strongly condemn it.

On 6 June 2024, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) issued a consultation paper for the revision of the National Numbering Plan. Regarding this consultation paper, TRAI has sought written suggestions from the stakeholders by 4 July 2024 and has also asked to give counter comments by 18 July.

TRAI said in its statement, the Department of Telecommunications is the sole custodian of telecommunication identifiers (TI) resources. And on 29 September 2022, it had sought suggestions regarding the Revised National Numbering Plan in the country so that the numbering resources in the country can be better utilized. TRAI’s consultation paper was issued to review this National Numbering Plan so that the factors affecting the allocation and use of telecom identifiers resources can be studied. TRAI said, its consultation is based on transparency.
