What can be the changes
TRAI’s recommendation has recommended changing the landline numbering system after the 2022 directive of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Recommendation In the directive of the Department of Telecommunications, instructions were given to fix the fixed line number and its telecom code. This decision has been taken on the basis of feedback received from experts and telecom operators. TRAI says that landline numbers should now also be of 10 digits like mobile, so that the numbers can be used properly. Also, to call from landline to landline, it will be necessary to first dial ‘0’, while the method of calling from mobile will remain the same as before.
6 Months deadline
Let us tell you that TRAI has given 6 months time to telecom companies for this change. In the next 5 years, landline numbers can also be ported like mobile. Instructions have been given to start Caller ID Name (CNAP) service soon to prevent fraud calls. Also, it has been advised to strengthen the verification process to prevent fake numbers. The telecom regulator has said that 13 digit numbers will be issued for machine-to-machine (M2M) devices, it is known that these numbers are currently of 10 digits. The telecom regulator also said that the Department of Telecommunications should expeditiously implement the system of displaying the caller’s name.
