Railways has decided to run 2 DMU rakes on Sonipat-Jind section with fuel cell powered hybrid traction system. In this hydrogen fuel based train will be operated.
Hydrogen Fuel Train Engine: You must have traveled a lot in trains! You must have noticed the train engine too! You must have seen 2 types of engines! First – diesel engine and second electric engine. Due to the diesel engine and electric engine, the passenger trains in many routes are called DMU and EMU. These two types of engines pull trains across the country. But soon a big change is going to be seen in this.
Yes! Indian Railways is now preparing to run trains with hydrogen fuel. The country’s first hydrogen fueled train will be run on the Sonipat-Jind section of Haryana. The length of this section/section is 89 kms.
Work being done under Zero Carbon Emission Mission
Railway has started the tender process for running the train with hydrogen fuel engine on Sonepat-Jind section on behalf of Northern Railway. Tender for this has been issued by Indian Railway Alternative Fuel Organization (IROAF). Work is being done to implement this scheme as soon as possible under the Zero Carbon Emission Mission by the Railways.

Agreement on Green House Gases
Recognizing the challenge of achieving the target of reducing greenhouse gases under the Paris Environment Agreement 2015 and the Railways is trying to achieve the target by 2030 under the Zero Carbon Emission Mission.
Railways has decided to run 2 DMU rakes on Sonipat-Jind section with fuel cell powered hybrid traction system. In this hydrogen fuel based train will be operated and necessary budgetary support has been provided for this.
2.3 crores to be saved annually
It has been told by the Railways that converting diesel-powered DEMU to hydrogen cell technology will save Rs 2.3 crore annually. Not only this, but the emission of 11.12 kilo tonnes of carbon footprint (NO2) and 0.72 kilo tonnes of particulate matter will also be stopped every year. This plan of the Railways is said to be ambitious. After the project is successful in this section, it will be adopted on other routes of the country as well.
