TRAI wants to bring such OTT services under a strong regulatory system. Recommendations will also be sent to the government for this.
Popular social media platforms WhatsApp, Signal, Facebook, Instagram and X may soon be banned. The telecom regulator will keep an eye on these. For this, TRAI is considering preparing a new system which is being discussed openly. TRAI wants to bring such OTT services under a strong regulatory system. Recommendations will also be sent to the government for this. TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti said this during a program on Friday.
At present, the government had kept OTT out of the regulatory regime in the new Telecom Act, but now TRAI is preparing to bring such services under the regulatory regime. TRAI Chairman says that strengthening the regulatory system will help in monitoring OTT services. This matter should be a part of the new IT Act on which work is currently going on.
The government had kept it out of reach
TRAI says that despite the government’s initiative to bring companies under the licensing regime, OTT services had been removed from the purview of the Telecom Act. This helps state and law-enforcement agencies to monitor their services. In such a situation, it is necessary to bring it under regulatory ambit. This will also help in stopping wrong content being circulated on social media platforms.
Consultation continues for OTT
TRAI Chairman says that the consultation for OTT was started after the recommendation of a parliamentary committee, hence it is being discussed. Recommendations will also be given on this. However, which Act it forms part of and which ministry or which regulator deals with it will be decided later. Let us tell you that the Lok Sabha had passed the Telecommunication Bill, 2023 in December last year. The Bill proposes to amend the law relating to the development, expansion and operation of telecommunication services and telecommunication networks and to consolidate spectrum assignment and matters connected therewith.
