TRAI’s new rule: After the implementation of TRAI’s new rule, telecom companies will have to be more careful while porting the SIM card and issuing a new SIM on the old number.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India: Preparations are being made by the telecom regulator TRAI to change the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) rules. TRAI is making this change to prevent fraud through SIM card swapping. Under this, the rules for changing and issuing SIM cards will be changed by the mobile operator. TRAI has sought suggestions from companies and customers in this regard till October 25. The Telecom Ministry has taken serious note of the increasing cases of SIM card swapping and has asked TRAI to tighten the rules.

Telecom companies will have to be more careful

In this regard, TRAI has held a meeting with telecom companies and number porting operators and discussed the order given by the ministry. After the implementation of TRAI’s new rule, telecom companies will have to be more careful while porting the SIM card and issuing a new SIM on the old number. They will have to check that the number for which the application for porting has been received has not been requested to port the SIM 10 days ago.

SIM swap or port requests will be blocked

If this is found in the investigation then the number will not be ported to the telecom operator. Under the new rule, mobile companies will have to share complete information about the customer porting the number with the porting operator. This will be investigated by the operator. If any deficiency is found, the SIM swap or port request will be stopped.

Actually, through SIM card swapping, fraudsters replace a person’s SIM card with a fake SIM. After this they get another SIM of the same number issued from the telecom service provider. In such a situation, when the mobile number is linked to the bank account or credit card, all types of OTPs go to the fraudster. Cases of such fraud have increased rapidly in the last few years.
