New Delhi, Tech Desk. A new case of caller ID app Truecaller data leak has surfaced. Cybercriminals have kept truecaller data of 4.75 crore Indian users on cell for Rs 75,000. According to the report by online intelligence firm Cyble, cyber criminals have kept the personal data of Indian users on cell. However, a spokesperson for Truecaller has ruled out any data breach. They say that cyber criminals are selling data by taking the name of Truecaller so that the data looks correct.
Cyble has written in its blog post that our researchers have found out that the truecaller data of 47.5 million (4.75 million) Indian users who have done cyber criminals selling data has been kept for sale for USD 1,000 (about Rs 75,000). This data of truecaller users has been collected in 2019. We are surprised that users’ personal data is being sold so cheaply.
These truecaller data of Indian users being sold by cyber criminals contains many information including users’ phone numbers, gender, city, mobile network, Facebook ID. Cyble researchers are trying to find out whether the Indian users are not facing incidents like spam, scam or any kind of cybercrime due to this data leak. Cyble has further written in his blog that as soon as we get more information, we will update our blog.
However, Truecaller has made it clear that there is no breech identification in our database. All our users’ information is completely safe. We take the privacy and service of our users seriously and constantly keep an eye on any kind of suspicious activity. A Truecaller spokesperson further stated, ‘The company was found out about selling similar data in May last year. What address should they have the same database as last year. It is not a big deal for cyber criminals to put multiple phone numbers in the database and put Truecaller stamp on them so that they can be sold easily. We urge people not to fall into the trap of these cyber criminals. ‘
Due to private data leaks, cyber criminals carry out various types of online crime, including cyber theft, scams, using personal information. Last week too, Cyble detected about the theft of personal information of 2.9 crore Indian users. This personal information was stolen from a job site.
