Twitter introduced Fleet, its own version of Instagram Stories, for users in India. The feature that has been borrowed from Snapchat and made popular by Instagram, will let users of Twitter post a tweet, photo, or a video that will only feature in their profile for 24 hours. The micro-blogging site had announced the feature long ago.
Twitter’s product lead Kavyon Beykpour announced the feature on the micro-blogging site. He wrote, “Namaste! Starting today, Fleets are coming to India. If you’re in India, check it out and let us know what you think!”
The Fleets are not something unheard of, the feature was previously seen and widely used in Instagram and Snapchat. The fleets posted by people you follow will appear at the top of your Twitter account, right below the icon. To view Fleets posted by people, you can tap on his profile picture to view his Fleets. The Fleets don’t stay up permanently on the site like Tweets. They cannot be shared, liked or get comments. However, people can react to your tweets with Direct Messages if you follow the person and are followed by him.
“India is important for Twitter since it is one of our largest and fastest-growing audience markets globally. We are excited to bring the Fleets experiment to India and make it one of the first three countries in the world to experience this new product,” said Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director at Twitter India, in a statement.
“From the test in India, we’ll learn how adding a new mode of conversation changes the way Indians engage on Twitter. It’ll also be interesting to see if it further amplifies the diversity of usage by allowing people to share what they’re thinking in a way that is light-touch and light-hearted,” he added.
Beykpour also acknowledged the Fleets’ similarity with Instagram Stories. He However stated that there are a “few intentional differences to make the experience more focused on sharing and seeing people’s thoughts.”

Fleets won’t remain in your profile for long so you can always write about your current state of mind or post a picture that you want to share immediately without giving much thought to it. The Fleets cannot shared so you also don’t have to worry about getting unnecessary comments to your fleets. Twitter users in India had a mixed reaction to this newly added feature by the micro-blogging site, while some quite liked the Instagram-like qualities, some wished to disable the feature immediately.
