Liquor rate in UP vs Dehli is available much cheaper in Delhi than Uttar Pradesh. Because of this, people from Noida-Ghaziabad and adjoining districts go to Delhi to buy liquor. But now this situation is about to change. Now liquor in UP is going to be cheaper than Delhi.
New Delhi: In this era of inflation, there is good news for the wine lovers. Premium brands liquor is going to be cheaper in Uttar Pradesh. After this the people of Uttar Pradesh will not need to go to Delhi to get cheap liquor. The price of foreign brand liquor in UP is going to be cheaper than in Delhi. Negotiations between the Uttar Pradesh government and liquor makers regarding price reduction have yielded positive results. In the next few days, cheap liquor will be available in the state. Many liquor makers have reduced the MRP on 36 premium brands. These include Glenlivet, Chivas Regal, Jameson, Ballantine’s, Aberlour and Absolut Vodka.
However, the shortfall of alcohol brands of Johnnie Walker’s parent company Diageo will continue for some time. With the start of the new financial year on April 1, the shortage of imported brands of liquor started in Uttar Pradesh. But the situation is expected to return to normal in the next few days. Along with this, people will get premium liquor at an affordable price.
How the price came down
After reviewing the price structure of foreign brands, the excise department felt that it is priced higher in the state than in Delhi. Imported brands are priced on the basis of cost, insurance and freight. After the basic lending cost, it attracts customs tariff. After this the state imposes excise duty on it. Before finalizing the MRP, companies add their profits to it. The department found that despite a similar duty structure in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, the price is higher in UP as compared to Delhi. After this, the companies making liquor were asked to bring down the prices in Uttar Pradesh to bring them at par with Delhi. In this way, now the price of branded liquor in UP will be equal to that of Delhi.
Additional Chief Secretary (Excise) Sanjay R Bhoosreddy has given strict instructions to the officers of Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut and other NCR districts to keep a strict vigil on the people coming from Delhi and Gurugram to buy liquor. Excise Commissioner Senthil C Pandian said that if the price of liquor in Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Baghpat and other neighboring districts will become equal to that of Delhi, then people will stop buying liquor from Delhi. Instead of taking action against the customers, we convinced the companies to reduce the rates. This will also increase their sales. Other companies are also in touch with us. Their stock will also arrive in a few weeks.
What is the screw
Retailers of UP say that huge discounts on liquor and many schemes are being run in Delhi. Devesh Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Liquor Traders Association in UP, said that many companies in Delhi are giving one free one for buying two bottles. Lower prices will increase demand, but the excise department should formulate a long-term strategy to compete with neighboring states.
Officials say that the price of most expensive liquor in UP has been reduced. For example, a 750 ml bottle of 25 year old Chivas Regal will now be available for Rs 16780. Its price is now Rs 1990. Its price in Delhi is Rs 22,250. Similarly, the price of 12 year old Aberlour has been reduced from Rs 4490 to Rs 3,300 in Uttar Pradesh. It is currently priced at Rs 3625 in Delhi.
