UPI New Rules: Today, from April 1, the rules of UPI payment have changed. According to the guidelines of NPCI, if an inactive mobile number is linked to your bank account, then the UPI transaction may fail. Update your active number as soon as possible for safe transactions, otherwise there may be trouble in payment

If you make UPI payments from apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, then this news is very important for you. New rules have come into effect from April 1, 2024, under which the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has given instructions to remove all those mobile numbers from the bank account, which have been inactive for a long time. The purpose of this move of NPCI is to prevent cyber fraud and fraud, because many times inactive mobile numbers are re-issued by telecom companies, which increases the possibility of fake transactions.

If an old or inactive mobile number is also linked to your bank account, then update it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you may face problems in making UPI payments, such as transaction failure or money reaching the wrong account

Why did NPCI take this decision?

In view of the rapidly increasing cases of cyber fraud and online fraud, NPCI has issued new guidelines. They say that mobile numbers which are not being used for a long time or are completely closed, it is necessary to remove them from the banking and UPI system. Technical problems are also being caused due to inactive numbers, which can affect UPI transactions. Apart from this, if telecom companies re-issue these numbers to another user, then cyber criminals can use them for fraud. For this reason, NPCI has instructed banks and payment apps to remove these numbers from the system.

Why does mobile number play an important role in UPI?

Your mobile number is your identity for UPI payment. Whenever you send money to someone, the transaction is confirmed through this number. If your mobile number has become inactive or has been issued to someone else, then—

  • Payment may fail
  • Money may reach the wrong account
  • Risk of fraud may increase
  • Therefore, it is important that the same mobile number is linked to your bank account, which you have in active status.

What to do now?

If an old or long-inactive number is linked to your bank account, check it as soon as possible.

First of all, contact your telecom service provider (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL) and confirm whether your number is still active in your name or not. If the number has been closed, activate it immediately by recharging or go to the bank and get your mobile number updated.

NPCI has instructed banks and UPI apps to update the list of inactive numbers every week, so that all such numbers are removed from the banking system after April 1.

If you want to make UPI payments without any interruption, then update your mobile number in time so that there is no problem later.
