The Ministry of External Affairs recently announced that Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services are now available in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also launched UPI and RuPay card services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a program to mark the inauguration of UPI and RuPay card services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Lyra announced the adoption of UPI in France earlier this month. Now you will be able to pay through UPI to see the Eiffel Tower in France.
What is UPI Unified Payments Interface?
UPI is the easiest and quickest way to make payments. In this, users can make real time payment from their bank account. In the last 2 years, many countries have accepted payment through UPI. Here is the list of countries in which UPI can be used for payment.
UPI in Bhutan
NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international branch of National Payment Corporation of India, and the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan (RMA) have partnered to enable and implement BHIM UPI QR-based payments in Bhutan on 13 July 2021. The collaboration between NIPL and RMA will enable payments through UPI operated BHIM app in Bhutan.
UPI, Rupay in Oman
The MoU between National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), International Payments Limited (NIPL) and Central Bank of Oman (CBO) has been signed on 4 October 2022. According to the Indian Embassy Oman, the MoU will help in building a partnership for real-time payments between India and Oman using UPI Rail.
Asian countries
NIPL has signed an agreement with Liquid Group to enable QR-based UPI payments in 10 countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Mauritius
Indian tourists going to Mauritius will be able to make payment through UPI at the spot. The use of RuPay technology will allow banks in Mauritius to issue RuPay cards locally through MauCAS cards.
Sri Lanka
Digital payments connectivity with Sri Lanka will enable Indian travelers to make QR code-based payments at merchant locations in Sri Lanka using their UPI apps.
Nepal
Nepali users can make bank transfers in India with Integrated Payment Interface (UPI) ID through mobile banking.
France
The famous Eiffel Tower in Paris, France has now officially introduced India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service. Through this, payment can be made through Unified Payment Interface (UPI) starting from the Eiffel Tower in France.
How does UPI work abroad?
To make UPI payments in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, people must first register their bank account with a UPI-enabled mobile application. The user will have to provide the bank account number and other information of the recipient of the payment. Along with this, information about how much money is to be given and in which currency will also have to be given. Payment can be made through UPI enabled application by scanning a QR code on the Eiffel Tower website.
How to make payment through UPI International through PhonePe
Step 1: Open the UPI app and go to the home screen.
Step 2: Click on your profile photo.
Step 3: Select UPI International in payment settings.
Step 4: Click on the bank account you want to use for international payment.
Step 5: Set UPI PIN for activation.
Make international payment through Google Pay
Transacting international payments is similar to domestic UPI payments. Bank fees and foreign exchange conversion rates are applicable.
Step 1: Open your Google Pay app. Scan the QR code by tapping it.
Step 2: Scan the International Merchant QR code. Select foreign currency and enter amount.
Step 3: Select the bank account through which you want to make the payment. Confirm payment and enter UPI PIN.
