For renewing the registration of a 15 year old car from 1st April, Rs 5,000 will have to be paid. Currently this fee is only 600. For foreign cars, this fee will increase from Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000.

Registration Renewal of Vehicle: Government is going to take strict steps regarding vehicles older than 15 years. According to the order of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, from April 1, the cost of re-registration of vehicles older than 15 years will increase by eight times. This rule will be applicable in those places where 15 years old petrol vehicles and 10 years old diesel vehicles are considered unregistered.

For renewing the registration of a 15 year old car from 1st April, Rs 5,000 will have to be paid. Currently this fee is only 600. For foreign cars, this fee will increase from Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000. For registration of two-wheeler vehicles, instead of Rs 300, Rs 1,000 will have to be paid.

Will also be fined

Not only this, the penalty for delay in registration will have to be paid separately. In case of delay in registration of private vehicles, a separate charge of Rs 300 per month and for commercial vehicles Rs 500 per month will have to be paid.

According to the ministry, from April 1, the cost of fitness test of old transport and commercial vehicles will also increase. After the commercial vehicles are more than eight years old, it is necessary for them to have a fitness certificate. The fitness test fee for taxis will be Rs 7,000 instead of Rs 1,000. For buses and trucks, this fee will increase from Rs 1,500 to Rs 12,500.

The central government has increased the compliance fee so that owners can choose to scrap their old vehicles which causes more pollution. More than one crore vehicles in India are eligible for scrapping. The Center has also made the process online to make it easier for car owners to scrap old vehicles.

Change in scrap policy

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued notification from the Vehicle Scraping Facility Amendment Rules 2022. It contains amendments to the Motor Vehicles (Registration and Works of Vehicle Scraping Facility) Rules 23 September 2021, which lay down the procedure for setting up Registered Vehicle Scraping Facility (RVSF).

The changes have been made based on the feedback received in the rules. Through these, the process of vehicle scraping has been made simple and digitized for all the stakeholders like vehicle owners, RVSF operators, dealers, regional transport authorities etc.
