At 6:45 am today (22 October), India tested its NAG anti-tank missile with an active warhead at the Pokhran firing range in Rajasthan.

The missile destroyed its target, an old tank, successfully.

Developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the missile is now ready for induction into the Indian Army.

NAG is a third-generation fire and forget missile with a range of 4 km.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation, its developer, has equipped the missile with an advanced indigenous imaging infra-red seeker.

NAG missile has been tested just days after India’s Standoff Anti-Tank (SANT) missile, with a range of 15-20 km, was tested on the western coast in Odisha. SANT is an improved version of the helicopter-launched NAG missile.

India has conducted at least 12 missile launches in the last one and a half months. Three anti-tank missile tests have been conducted in this period. This is the thirteenth missile test and the fourth anti-tank missile test in the last 46 days.

The missile is capable of penetrating both ‘reactive’ and ‘composite’ armour and can be used in both top-attack and front-attack configurations.

The missile has a high single-shot kill probability.

The third-generation anti-tank missile will now enter production phase. It will be produced by Defence PSU Bharat Dynamics Limited.
