Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on the demise of DMDK Chief Captain Vijaykant. He tweeted, extremely saddened by the demise of Thiru Vijayakanth ji. A stalwart of the Tamil film industry, his charismatic performance won the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on the political landscape of Tamil Nadu. His demise has left a void which will be difficult to fill.
DMDK was formed in 2005
– Actor Vijayakanth formed Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam party in 2005. DMDK was the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu from 2011 to 2016 and Vijayakanth was the leader of the opposition in the assembly.
– In 2006, Vijayakanth’s party DMDK had contested elections on all 234 seats in Tamil Nadu. But Vijaykant alone was successful in winning the election. His party’s candidates had to face defeat on all the remaining seats. However, his party got 8.38% votes in this election.
– A similar situation happened with Vijaykant’s party in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections , when the party contested 39 out of 40 Lok Sabha seats in the state, but did not win even a single seat. Vijaykant’s party did not form an alliance with any party in both these elections.
– In 2011, Vijaykant’s party contested elections on 41 seats and won 29 seats. In this election, DMDK emerged as the second party after Jayalalitha’s party (AIADMK), Vijayakanth became the leader of the opposition. However, after this, his party could not succeed in winning even a single seat in the 2016 and 2021 assembly elections.
Similarly, in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, DMDK could not succeed in winning even a single seat.
