Bengaluru Water Crisis: Bangalore Water Board has announced strict penalties on those who waste drinking water. The demand for water has increased due to rising temperatures in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru. The city of Bengaluru has announced that now heavy fines will be imposed on wastage of drinking water. The Bangalore Water Board has said that a fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed for using drinking water for other purposes including washing cars and gardening. At the same time, more penalties can also be imposed on repeat violators.

According to NDTV, there was a severe water shortage last summer, which became worse due to rising temperatures and lack of rain. There has also been a significant drop in groundwater levels. Half of the 14,000 borewells in Bengaluru have dried up, resulting in an even lower supply of groundwater levels. As per the new rule, using drinking water for non-essential activities like washing cars, gardening, decorative fountains and even in malls and cinema halls will attract a fine of Rs 5,000.

Due to rising temperatures and depleting groundwater levels, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has banned the use of drinking water for non-essential purposes. According to PTI, those violating the order will be fined Rs 5,000.

According to the order issued by the Bangalore Water Board, “Under Section 33 and 34 of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act 1964, BWSSB has prohibited the use of potable water for cleaning vehicles, gardening, construction of buildings and roads, for recreational purposes or for fountains etc. in the city of Bengaluru.”

Malls and cinema halls have been allowed to use water only for drinking purposes. The order said, “In case of violation, a fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed for the first time and a fine of Rs 5,000 will be imposed for repeat violations. An additional fine of Rs 500 will also have to be paid per day.”

Describing drinking water supply as essential for all, the BWSSB said that at present the temperature in Bengaluru is increasing every day. Due to lack of rainfall, the groundwater level has decreased. Therefore, it is important to stop wastage of water in Bengaluru city.

The water board said that residents can report violations by calling 1916. The water board statement also urged people to play an active role in conserving the city’s precious water resources. Experts from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have warned of a possible worsening of the water crisis in the coming months.

In recent months, Bengaluru faced a shortage of 300-500 million litres of water per day. Bengaluru requires about 1450 MLD (million litres per day) of water from the Cauvery river along with an additional 700 MLD from groundwater.
