How To Set UPI Number: UPI has gained tremendous popularity as a payment method in India. It is widely used for bill payments, shopping and even small amount transactions. There are many reasons for this, the main reason being that it is very simple to use. It only requires a smartphone, a mobile number linked to a bank account, internet connection and UPI app.

Users can easily pay friends using their UPI ID. Apart from this, NPCI has introduced a new feature called UPI Number which further secures the security of payments. So let us know in detail in this article what is UPI number and how to set it in your bank account…

What is a UPI number?

UPI number is a bank-verified number that is the identifier of your UPI ID. Through this, we can transact money with any user, even if he is using UPI of another app.

Users can create 3 unique UPI numbers from one UPI ID, which can include their phone number or any 8-9 digit numeric ID of their choice. It is worth noting that UPI number can also be of 10 digits but this will happen only when the user wants to make his mobile number as his UPI number.

It is also important to note that UPI users cannot receive payments through their phone number unless they set up their phone number as a UPI number. However, they can still receive payments through their UPI ID or chathead. So let’s know how to set up a UPI number with the help of UPI ID. Usually people use Google Pay and Phone Pay.

How to set up UPI number

On Google Pay:

  • Click on your profile photo in the top right.
  • Click on “Payment Method”, and select the bank account for which you want to create a UPI number.
  • Now click on “Manage UPI Number”.
  • Select your preferred UPI number and click on ‘Continue’ to save it.

On PhonePe:

  • Click on your profile picture on the home screen of the PhonePe app.
  • Click on UPI Settings in the Payment Management section.
  • Tap on UPI number on the left side of the screen.
  • Select the bank account for which you want to set 8 or 9 digit UPI number.
  • Now set a unique 8 or 9 digit UPI number.
  • Tap on Verify.
  • If UPI number is available, click on Confirm and Create.
