UPI Payment: If you have accidentally transferred money to the wrong UPI ID through PhonePe, GPay or Paytm, do not panic and file a complaint.
Wrong UPI Transactions: With the growing trend of digital payments, fund transfers through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) have become common. Despite being fast, secure and convenient, sometimes small mistakes can cause trouble, such as sending money to a wrong UPI ID or mobile number. However, there is no need to panic in such a situation as there are many ways available to correct it. To get back the money transferred to an unknown person, you have to prove that the funds were sent inadvertently. Once proven, the bank is responsible for reversing the transaction.
Have you accidentally transferred money to the wrong UPI ID?
If you have accidentally transferred money to a wrong account, first check the transaction details and confirm that the money has indeed gone to the wrong account. After this, contact the concerned person and request a refund. If contact is not possible, immediately complain to the customer care of your bank or UPI service provider (such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm).
Where can you complain
If there is no solution from the bank, you can lodge a complaint on the official website of NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) or RBI’s Banking Ombudsman Service. To avoid such mistakes in future, check the UPI ID carefully before making payment and confirm by transferring a small amount before sending a large amount.
You can take the following five steps to get back money sent to the wrong UPI address
- Contact the recipient: Contact the recipient and inform them about the transaction. Also, appeal for their cooperation in returning the money.
- Contact UPI app customer support: Report the wrong transaction to the customer support team of the UPI app. Share all relevant information and evidence to help initiate the refund process.
- File a complaint with NPCI: If the issue is not resolved through the app’s customer support, file a complaint with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Provide transaction details and supporting evidence for further investigation.
- Seek assistance from your bank: Inform your bank about the erroneous transaction. Share the required details and documents to assist them in initiating the chargeback process to get the money transferred back.
- Call a toll-free number: In case the transaction is to the wrong UPI address, you can call the toll-free number 1800-120-1740.
- Contact an independent officer of RBI: If the issue is not resolved even after a month or you are dissatisfied with the response, contact the independent officer of RBI (Ombudsman) for digital transactions.
Precautions to avoid erroneous transfers in future:
- Check the UPI ID, mobile number or QR code carefully before sending money.
- Confirm the name in the “Pay to” section before the transaction.
- Send a small amount to confirm before sending a larger amount.
